Although it certainly develops from that point on and does get “darker”. The first half is a little slow going, and while reading it, I was disappointed that it wasn’t as “dark” as I was led to believe it would be. It wasn’t until about halfway through that I realized it was going to be better than I anticipated, and until that point, I wasn’t really a fan. Though I’ll admit, even while reading it, I had my doubts. Overall, I’ve found this to be quite a complex work of fiction with more literary merit than I feel it’s credited with. I also want to mention that this is one of those books which I’ve thought more favorably of since reading it as I seem to like it a little bit more everytime I think of it now. But maybe that’s why I had such a good experience with it. Going into this, I didn’t expect much from it. But if you delve a bit deeper into this novel, you’ll find a cast of complex and fully-developed characters, an example of mob-mentality in a frighteningly real setting, and essentially the death of free will and individualism. Most would say this is simply a story about a chocolate sale.
